Paprika
When Reality and Dreams Collide
Imagine being able to enter people's dreams; sharing the same dream with them and unearthing some of their deepest secrets harbored within them. In the near future, this dream is becoming a reality, thanks to a brand new invention called the DC Mini. This device allows one to enter anyone's dreams, making it both amazing, yet dangerous. Of course, there are many things to be fixed with the prototype, such as providing access restrictions etc. However, what happens when three prototypes are stolen before such security measures are taken?
Meet Dr. Atsuko Chiba, a serious researcher, who has been using the DC Minis illegally to perform psychotherapy sessions to psychiatric patients outside the research facility. In her sessions, Chiba assumes her alter ego form known as Paprika, a bubbly spontaneous foil to Chiba's real personality. Her associates and her keep Paprika's exploits secret and hidden from public eye. Everything seems to be fine, until three prototypes are stolen before the final adjustments are made. Naturally, chaos emerges. People have unrestrained access in their dreams, and slowly but surely the dream world and reality begin to merge. Now it's up to Chiba and her obese researcher Dr. Tokita , who designed and invented the DC Mini, to restore the boundaries between the two worlds.
Directed by the great and late Satoshi Kon, Paprika is a great movie that will be sure to twist your mind with the basic yet convoluted plot . It has stellar animation and great music, giving you the full and typical Satoshi Kon experience. In the end it will make you wonder, was it all just a dream?
